Gangaur Festival
The famous and ethnic Gangaur festival draws its name from the terms 'Gan' i.e. Lord Shiva and 'Gauri' i.e. Godesses Parvati. The women of Rajasthan and Bikaner celebrate Gangaur with great gusto and enthusiasm.
Young girls, ladies and women pray to Goddess Parvati with complete devotion and observe age-old rituals. Single women and adolescent girls believe that if they fast and observe traditional customs then they'll be blessed with good husbands. Married women believe Gangaur is an auspicious occasion when they can invoke the blessings of Goddess Gauri for a long and prosperous life for their husbands.
The 18-day Gangaur fiesta brightens up the Bikaner desertscape with hope, prayer and cultural glitter. Gangaur festival celebrations begin on the day after Holi celebrations. Women fast, matherans or local artists paint wooden images of Isar and Gauri and ladies adorn their hands and feet with ornate henna patterns.
Bikaner vibrates with ghudlia folk songs, as single girls carry earthen pots with oil lamps on their heads through the rustic Bikaner streets during the Gangaur festival. People give sweets, ghee and other offerings to these girls and the earthen pots are broken near a lake or water tank on the concluding day of the Gangaur festival.
